Singing high notes without straining requires good airflow and good release of the muscles around the larynx. One of the aspects of achieving this is to plan to increase airflow as you ascend, getting louder, which helps the larynx stay released. By doing this, the transition into our upper register can be smoother and have a more consistent sound with our chest voices.
